The Council of the Palembang Customary Community installed Raden Muhammad Syafei Prabu Diraja as Sultan of Palembang Darussalam with the title of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin III after the throne had been vacant for 178 years.

The coronation of the sultan took place at the Lawang Kidul Mosque, close to the tomb of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I (1724-1756), known as Kawah Tengkurep.

Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin III replaced Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II who ruled until 1821, until exiled to Ternate, where he died in 1852. He was succeeded by Sultan Ahmad Najamuddin III as the sovereign ruler from 1821-1823, but with restricted power until ca. 22-11-1824.

Ahmad Najimuddin III was the son of Ahmad Najimuddin II; the younger brother of Mahmud Badaruddin II (one of the national heros of Indonesia), who ruled from 1812-1813/1813-1818.
He fled after trying unsuccessfully to regain full power. He later surrendered and the monarchy in Palembang was abolished soon after.

There was a "smooth" transition of power nevertheless (with a bit of help from the Dutch of course!) during those turbulent years.

The newly installed Sultan said "It's just beginning, I will conduct an inquiry of the sultanate area, customs and traditions, descendants and the sultanate accoutrements after the Council of the Palembang Customary Community approves me as the valid heir of the sultanate. The role of the sultanate which I will have will not be the same as Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II, as I will only be a customary leader because Palembang is now controlled by the Republic of Indonesia," he added.
